GTI engine spec?

Hello to you all, just joined up today!

My girlfriend bought a 2006 Polo GTI at the weekend with 23K on the clock. 3 Dr, Black and Vienna leather interior. We initially went to the dealer to look at MK5 Golfs (GTI or 2.0 TDI) but saw the Polo and fell for it immediately. It drives superb, and that was the clincher!

I don't know anything about Polos, but know VWs in general quite well as I've owned them since 1993.

I lifted the bonnet this morning to have a butchers at the oil (which was pretty black) and the 1.8T engine looks nothing like the ones I've seen in the Golfs and Passats etc, and it's certainly well packed in there!

Does anyone know the full spec and engine code? I noticed it has a DBW throttle, so is clearly a late engine, but what size turbo is it? K03? K03s?
Does it have the variable valve timing system?

Just trying to gauge future upgradability as I can't resist tinkering

yes it is a late spec engine and its a bjx engine code

it does have variable valve timing and comes with the ko3s turbo mate

as for it looking nothing like the others, well actually it does, just the inlet is going to the drivers side not the passenger side for the intercooler, just take the engine cover off and its all but identical then

with the mods in my sig mine is producuing a nice healthy 220 bhp and loads of torques to match, and thats only still with a stage 1 map

ill be fitting my n75j at the weekend too to smoothen delivery back out a bit so fingers crossed it works problem free

When the missus has finished with it, I'm planning on modding it quite extensively, so it's good to know it already has a good base to start from.

How often do you guys change the oil? Noticed it's very black in ours and the next service isn't due until March 09!

Does it use that over priced 0W/30 'long life' stuff, or would Quantum Silver suffice?

Let me know what the N75J is like. I've got a Forge 007 in the shed ready to go on. Is the stock one still that fragile plastic Bosch affair?

220hp is great for the modest changes you've made. I read up on the TDi160 snorkel and Forge TIP before registering, so it's good to see you guys are playing.

What does the Polo weigh? Must be, what, 1100kg? That much grunt in such a small car..... you must really annoy some road captains out there

the car weighs in at 1160, well thats mine, it will differ slightly mods and optional extras dependant

i personally change the oil ever 6k mate, its not necessary to but for peice of mind i do and i have awesome gti do it not the dealer, awesome if your not aware are a vag car specialist in irlam, manchester

if you turn the ignition on then press and hold in the trip counter reset button for 2 seconds it will tell you how long until a service is due, this may help you distinguish if its on longlife or not, but if the service is noly due next at march 09 it certainly sounds like a longlife car

personally i dont like longlife, and my car came on it, so i had it converted to normal time and distance oil by awesome gti on its service and back on to 10w40 mobil oil, as the 0w30 stuff is just too thin in my opinion for the engine, and doing up to 20k between servicing just aint right either

yes the standard dv is the fragile bosch item, another reason i have upgraded to a 007p

im also running the pd160 intake and trumpet, as more air cant be a bad thing eh

I agree with you entirely. 20K is far too long a service interval for a turbo engine. Especially on such thin oil!

I would change it every 6K aswell if it were my car, but the missus is very 'by the book' and will do what ever the dealer says.

Good fully synth 10/40 oil and standard Fram filter £25... Change it while the Mrs is out ... lol

Trouble is chaps, she's seen first hand what happens (and how much it costs me) when fiddling on my Corrado goes a bit wrong, so she's really reluctant to let me near her Polo

I had a good drive around in the Polo this weekend, getting to know it. It's great for darting out of junctions and away from traffic lights etc

My only complaints are a surging feeling to the boost with wide throttle openings from low speeds and a lack of response at motorway speeds (compared to how nippy it feels at lower speeds).

I think the latter is down to aggressive throttle mapping at low rpms. I've felt the same on the R32 and 2.0 T FSI engines. VW map the throttle too aggressively at low rpms to make it feel very lively, and because of that, the acceleration feels blunted at higher rpms. VW really need to be more linear with the throttle mapping.

The surgey feeling I think could be the N75 valve maybe? Feels like the boost is climbing quickly and nicely and then the ECU is pulling it back. Again, too aggressively.

Can these characteristics be mapped out? I just want a nice smooth and linear response. And so does the missus..... but she doesn't know it yet

Marcopolo...is it chipped already ?

Standard boost usually feels quite smooth.....the 150 1.8T only makes 0.5 bar -ish standard..theres nothing for the ecu to pull back...

However when chipped the throttle can be very aggressive low down especially if mapped for 98 super unleaded. The 1 bar boost of a chipped motor can cause problems with boost control, especially it seems at around 3200rpm in my case, where the ecu sometimes pulls back then lets it go again.

Its easily possible to have bought a chipped one, I did, the dealer never new. I could tell by "bum on seat" feeling, it just felt too nippy to be standard. Got it home plugged in my kit and sure enough Revo had already been installed.

What software do you use to interrogate the ECU? Would a VAG-COM UNI-COM lead work with the Polo's ECU? And where is the OBD2 port? I tried to find it on Sunday but couldn't!

I had a bad experience with a 'generic' mapped 1.8T once. Custom maps only from now on!!

Yes Vag-com fine with the Polos old ME7.5-1m ecu.

Diagnostic socket is just under the dash on RHS. Put head in driver's footwell and look up - you cannot miss it - usually purple.

Easiest way to tell with vag-com is to log boost (115) with vag-com out on the road.

You can tell as soon as you go to accelerate by watching the requested boost, if you can see approx 1 bar boost (dont forget to take off 1bar off the readings for atmospheric pressure) then you know for sure its already done.

i had the surging boost issue on my apr mapped 98 super unleaded program

£46 later my new n75j valve turned up from VAG parts and its smooth as silk again now, not a single on and off boost or acceleration feeling in the slightest, a worthy cheap mod to say the least

Ah so the N75J worked out then? That's good to hear. Is there only one kind of N75J? The N75 has quite a few variations! I think I'll get on the phone to VAG Parts.

I've just ordered the HEX+USB+CAN cable, from Ross Tech. When it arrives I'll take the car out for a spin and check it out.
