Help needed with stereo - it wont come out!

Post by poloolop »

Hi, im a bit of a noob, so be gentle :)

Im trying to get the stereo out of R reg polo (6n?) but i just cant get it to come out. Am i being thick, have i missed something obvious?

the headunit is a sony one, i presume its standard as it says VW on it, but even with the sony key inserted into the two holes i cant get it to budge..

Can anyone suggest a way of getting it out? am i doing something wrong, or can the dash facia come off at all?

please help, cheers :)

When you put the keys in, do you hear a click at all?

You may not be putting them in the right place, but its hard to see, try taking off the black plastic surround first, it may reveal something more

Hi tim, thanks for the reply,

im inserting into the right holes to my knowledge as i have a very similar sony head unit to swap it for. on this one, when i push the key in it releases the stereo from the cage.
on the one in the car, it doesnt release and feels a bit empty in the holes like the catches may be broken :(

i dont know if you can get the black surround off? i may be able to unscrew it.

The black surround should come off with a bit of fiddling, you don't need to unscrew anything,

If you think the clips are broken, you'll have to just wiggle the whole thing and try and get the cage out at the same time, its really time consuming and can be a right tw*t to get out but patience will pay off

i think the two screws on the left of the 2nd piccie need to come out, but the rest might unclip if its anything like my other one.

i already tried some wiggling and pulling for around an hour before i gave up :( but theres not really that much to hold onto as i had my fingers in the tape deck and didnt wanna break the front..

no none of those screws looks like they'll help with getting it out, jsut taking it apart!!

(don't own a 6N so won't know sorry) But can you get your hands behind the radio and push it out?

I've done that before in previous cars

Have you tried removing some of the front screws, and inserting longer ones, then using them as something to pull on to pull it out?

Careful when trying, you may break it!
