1.4 head, will it need skimmed?

Post by kezbo »

Im considering taking the head off of my girlfirends 1.4 AEX engine polo (1996) to drill out and retap one of the exhaust manifold studs which has snapped. The question is will the head need to be skimmed or are they generally ok to go straight back on? Obviosuly will be putting new gasket etc on. As far as I know there is not problem with the current gasket, not looseing water or oil etc.

As long as its not overheated and the head gasket was ok it should be fine.

From my limited knowledge.. the way i have been explained it...

IS that.... when you take the head gasket off you will see if it needs skimming.. if their are cracks or any signs of the surface not been dead smooth or flat... then you need it SKIMMED.

Could be wrong.

Exhaust studs are on front side of the engine - easily accesible with a right angle drill - I'd drill it out and use an easy out before I'd even consider removing the head.

Head removal to me always = pressure test - skim - valve seats cut - valves reprofiled - new stem seals - head gasket - head bolts - exhaust manifold gaskets

Probably a load of other gaskets too and that costs a heck of a lot more than a right angle drill adaptor, a set of high quality easi outs and a can of plus gas
