My car has exactly the same problem. I was thinking its just me. It has done it quiet a few times. I'm worried if I book it in they'll say the same no fault and I wont be able to fault it there/then.

I'll pm you Jeff, any chance of getting that worksheet so I get them/VW to refer to your case.

Kind Regards

I have the same ploblem on my GTI. It just want to know what causes the syncro to crunch? Is the the clutch not disengaging far enough or not to quickly or is there maybe a problem with the hydraulics?

My Last Polo GTI Turbo had a week synchromesh 1st to 2nd, only crunched when really trying to change gear quickly. Sounds like its pretty common for them to do this!
Funny thing is I had done a track day in it and it never played up at all, only on the road - maybe the 'box needs to be used with a reasonable amount of care until thoroughly warmed up?

I unfortunately didn't get chance to see if the problem got any worse as I got punted by a nice uninsured plank of a fellow (bless this society of speed cameras and no reassuring presence of traffic cops!), couldn't live with a repaired car so got rid and got a new one - hopefully this Polo will be a bit more lucky

it's 1st to 2nd that usually becomes the weak spot of a car. probably the most commonly stressed gear changed.

i think you've been bloody lucky to get that fixed with only a slight bit of fuss. if they knew it had been chipped they'd have probably told you exactly where to stick it!

i find with my polo that occasionally, for no reason at all, i won't be able to engaged first at all, and then after a while it goes back to normal.

I also find going from first to second rather notchy and it crunches, same goes from third to forth.

Apparently its a common problem?

What can be done?

i had the same problem with My 2007 GTI,
same story as yours,
they aslo said that i revved to much in high RPM :?
my GTI did it in beginning at 5500 and higher RPM,
but after a month or so i could not get above 4500rpm or it makes a sound or not getting in second gear.
they made the gearbox in waranty and i haven't had a problem sinds then...
guess there's a problem with the first generation of fabric gearbox or so

Thread back from the dead.

Basically after pestering the dealer for months I've had mine repaired 1st/2nd gear sync but have some issues that I am not happy with.

When i put it into 1st/2nd pushing the stick it all the way to the left intentionaly, as it sometimes just happens during normal shifting it seems to catch onto something i.e. not smooth, extra notchy.

Also very little movement to the left 1st/2nd compared to 3rd/4th. Can anyone with a GTI please help.

The clutch only disengage when I press the pedal right down to the floor. I'm just wondering if there may be also vapour lock in the clutch/brake fluid system, because the brakes aren't that agressive.

The GTI is going in next week for the gearbox repair at VW so I will also request them to flush and replace the clutch/brake fluid.

I will post the results when I get the GTI back.

CRUNCHING SYNDROME

Post by polo226kph »

I got the GTI back today. The service manager said they drained and changed the gearbox oil. They also replaced the clutch/brake fluid. I took it for a test drive and the gear changes are now very smooth even at 6500rpm. The brakes are also now more agressive.

I reccommend new Polo owners to immediately have their cars gearbox oil and clutch/brake fluid changed when the "crunching syndrome" becomes apparent.

Are UK GTI's and rest of the world GTI's made in the same factory?
