They retail at around $2499....
which is about £1200....... might be worth it, if it costs too much to build your own one....but alex is all clued up with that..

@BratManGTi: Personally i think the Pc has an overall benefit than a Play station or any games console for that matter. As with a play station your limited to playing games, watching dvds and listening to music and thats basically about all you can do. You'll be able to do that and a whole hundred other things with a pc for example load up a GPS navigation system, Do a bit of word proccessing, surf the web and theres a billion other things you can do! So personally i would prefer to have a comp than a games console and your right on the aspect of power a comp will suck a whole load of power but overall i would prefer a comp and i'm sure other people would to but thanks for the suggestion.

@matty: If only i had that sort of money  , But i agree i think it's way cheaper to build your own one! Just about £250-£300 max depending on what you put in at first and a screen which is around £200. Pretty good investment i think. You can take everything out and shove it in the next car you have!

Now that the exams are finally over i'm going to go make a quick move to finishing of the project. My problem now would be that, would i be able to use the ignition wire from the cigarette lighter for the ignition to the car psu without any problems. I'm under the impression that the ignition wire only holds a small amount of current to make the wiring understand that it can now get power am i right or totally wrong? and going to crap everything up?

The project is turning into a weekend jobby at this time, just too busy on weekdays to do anything and the only time i get free time is on the weekend. So Another little update revised the whole spec and well i ditched the invertor route personalyl think it's a waste of time and nosie and space. Therefore i'm going to this properly and going to use a DC-DC Car PSU.

Its been an interesting few weeks...
The ibizas had a few problems, so has to go back to the garage under warrenty tomorrow. Oh how I miss my polo

Anyway, on a brighter side the computer has moved on well. It is now ready for a rough install in the car after ive got myself a few wires eg power, VGA extention ect. I intend to order these on ebay in the next few days so should arive in the next few weeks but there is no rush as I think I might leave installing it untill the warrenty has finnished.

I need to get satnav software running on it, which might be a problem due to all decent software being 16bit applications. Still, this can wait. I intend to run a power cable from the battery to the PC which can also power the amplifier in the boot. The seat has a built in headunit with no auxiliry inputs, however it does have a cd changer connection in the boot. I intend to build this circuit: http://www.k9spud.com/vwcdpic/ This will allow me to put audio into the HU and controll the track the pc plays using the next track button. Need to pay a visit to maplins i think...

Polodude, Im using the M2-ATX PSU. They are great, but be VERY carfull with it as they are very easy to blow and damage as they have no current protection built in. I blew a PSU and motherboard when I plugged the P4 connecter in when it was turned on (Idiot!).

As I think I mentioned earlier on, the orriginal screen broke so I got a different on which seems to be quite good, anyway, Im going to go and take some pics as Ive been promising for ages!

I'm affarid tim you going to have to wait an incy wincy bit longer again for the pics. Been a pretty fustrating day!! :x , I need a bit of help aswell! Here we go, went to go and install the drivers for the touch screen today, before i took and pictures/videos for you guys, wanted everything working perfectly showing the touch screen working ect. However when installing the drivers. It does not seem to find the port that the screen is attached to or the screen for that matter so that i can calibrate it. I was just wondering would i be able to use another touch screen driver for the same screen, or would i need to use the same driver but an updated version of it??

Got everything working guys. It's offically finished. I've got loads and loads of Videos on my phone, sent it to the comp by Bluetooth but this may seem a little bit silly but how do you play/convert. 3GP File (.3gp). Or can i just upload this straight to youtube??

Sorry for the long wait guys. Managed to nick a camera off a mate and take a video. Pretty short but you'll get the drift. There are a whole load of other features that do pop up like GPS, Radio, Weather, Internet. However all these need additional components. Which will soon be working once i find some cash to buy them, but overall I'm pretty pleased with my project. However i did cheat a little bit and bought a computer that was already designed for a car environments of a guy on CP:

Sumicom 630 (xenarc clone)
Cpu P4 2.4 ghz Socket 478.
1gb DDR ram.
120gb 3.5" HD
Built in GFX,Sound,LAN and Firewire.
Slimline Laptop DVD/CD Burner

Very small about the size of 2 CD cases.
Image

For the P4 system that i had. I also bought the CARNETIX 19v Power Supply unit. To work with it.

Just to also say that the Pc, has been wired in a way that i take the pc out everyday. Without worrying about where it might be next for those wondering hands!!
