Whinning noise when accelerating

My polo gti makes a whinning noise when i accelerate and gets higher the faster i go has anyone had the same noise? Thanx

Does it only happen when the car is in gear..i.e. does it stop when you take it out of gear? If this is the case it sounds like your gearbox could be on the way out..sounds very similar to what happened to me. Hope that helps

yeah it does stop when i take it out of gear and when im changing down it sort of ticks as i slow down.

Yeh if the sound is speed related (i.e makes the noise regardless of whether the clutch is up or down, and gets louder the faster you go) it could be a wheel bearing,

But whinning that disapears when out of gear? sounds like the gearbox buddy

Depends how bad the whine is...

My car does just that and I have had the gearbox replaced!

I suspect its a bearing somewere on the engine block that only whines when its loaded....

unless it gets worse I woulnt worry too much!
