Rear Wiper (not switching off as it should)

Post by pologarry »

Hi all...got a little problem with my daughters 1997 1.4cl that when you operate the rear wiper from the steering stalk you can not turn it back off as you should on the stalk...only way to turn the rear wiper off is to switch off the ignition then restart the car and its ok...also she says that when she operates the rear washers on the stalk no water is jetted on the rear screen as it use to but the front washers operate aswell...after a search im putting that down to a pipe come loose or the return valve at the washer bottle...

its not a major issue and some will say de-wiper the rear but id rather it working as she's only just passed her test..ive not had a chance to have a look till the weekend but im thinking along the lines of maybe a relay or stalk problem...

Garry :)

Try the relay first...thats a cheap fix, much cheaper than a stalk unless you have a scrapyard near you. The lack of water would suggest a blocked jet, split pipe, or problem at the bottle end. Best to check it in the tailgate itself. If its in need of a new jet, they are like 3 quid from your local dealer, and just pull out the old push in the new. Have a good check of the pipework first tho ;)

one thing i have noticed unrelated though that in the boot on the offside behind the first aid compartment there is like a plastic box with a pipe going in to it....what the hell is it...

The handbook isn't very clear

Press the stalk softly (Do Not fully depress) to to operate the wiper on a one sweep and then no more basis

Press the stalk button fully in "briefly" to operate the wiper on a continuous intermittant basis

When in this mode to turn it off Press the stalk button fully in "briefly" and it will cancel the intermittant operation

Activating the washers requires a press and hold and also leave the wiper on intermittant so requires a reset as described above

I put that down to a pull on the stalk as well as a push - if you can here the pump working and the level in the reservoir drops I'd definately look at the pipework behind the rear seats and check the footwells and tailgates for water - been there and done that!!!

The back windows on Polos get really dirty when it rains - de-wipering isn't that clever - a neater wiper is a better and more practical for everyday use - but I might be alone on wanting whats fitted to wark properly and an image concious forum

I had wondered if my advice was helpfull - glad it's sorted

It pissed the other half off when I got her the 6n cos she couldn't get it either and the wiper was on all the time!!! - Perhaps we just "understand it"
