Ya think I should stick in another engine?
, if the engine conversion goes fine with my mates, should I get his MK5 engine? Or look for a G40 lump?

Haynes manual is sucha a load of tripe sometimes,
AAU - 1043 cc single point injection
AAV - 1272 cc single-point injection
3F - 1272 cc multipoint injection (im guessing this is the GT then)
PY - 1272 cc multipoint supercharged
not very... comprehensive r they?

AAV and NZ have both 55bhp
3f has 75 hbp
PY has 112bhp
the 1.4l engines (from 6n to 9n) are available from 60 tot 125bhp (8v and 16v versions and also mpi or singlepoint versions)

Insiders at VW say that the NZ was to close to the 3F, in the lower rpm region the NZ is even a bit more powerfull than a 3f.
So VW replaced the NZ with the AAV in te polo mk3 series.
And the AAV was a cheaper build engine.
Other thing mabye, I'm not sure, The AAV engine runs a bit cleaner (NOx CO values) due betters electronics, The NZ runs with less electronics.
edit:
I mean with electronics mainly the ECU
The AAV runs with everything controlled by the ECU (ignitiontimings, fuell amount and injection timings)
The NZ uses some more "old fashion" ways to control some of these things. Not by ECU but by (not sure about the correct word) under or low pressure units, it will mechanical set the ignition timings.

AAU - 45hp, 55lbft (probably cracking on for 50 without cat)
AAV - 55hp, 68? lbft <-- cant remember and am lazy (ditto 60)
3F - 75hp, 70-ish lbft (more of a top end power than an all round torque boost from the mpi conversion - still its more punchy for all figures and has very similar economy)
G40 - 118hp, 90-something lbft
it does actually say these figures in the haynes manual (as well as the polo owners handbook) but you have to fish for them. they're a bit slack on consistency.
the 40 and 50hp engines were the old carb ones from the 80s, 998 and 1108cc instead of 1043 and 1275.
Dunno about the NZ
Sad to hear about being 0wn3d by the rover - hope it was a high powered one at least to save face. The figures look good on their engines, but they're high geared (1st is like an extra 33% on my 4spd - can hit >40mph with a similar limiter) - but close, mind you, 4th isnt actually that different - and heavy. Mum's 1.4 could of course whip me any day, but still seems to be badly lacking in the hill climb dept, so you have to cane it to get any acceleration.. (yep, the exact same 1.4 that's used in the MG without even so much as a turbo. Are those hot hatches or warm??).
