Engine cuts out when reach low revs..Please help

hello. I am new to this. i purchased a polo 1.4se 2000 reg in octoer and it was running fine. then i began to notice a very slight power loss but this was random and had no repetition. after this i was driving one night and the engine just cut out whilst moving. this has become more and more frequent to the point that i know most journeys my engine will cut out. today i realised that it paticuarly cuts out when i am in fifth gear on a motor way for example and then go down gears to 1 in order to come to a standstill. i will feel the car have a slight back pull andthen when the clutch is down between gear change the rev counter wil drop to zero. if anyone has heard of this problem i would appreciate some advice. thanks
