I carried out an engine flush last weekend.
I used a liquid flush called forte.
It is a reputable brand within the industry...so they say.

Heat engine to normal temp
Add the flush to existing oil
Tickover for approx 1/2 hour if engine oil is dirty/bad, or 20 mins if oil is clean.
Switch off
Let engine cool down.
Drop the oil and filter
Fit drain plug with new seal if required
Fit new filter
Top up with fresh oil
Check for leaks

There you go.

My oil was so f**ked i had to replace the oil seperator and breather pipe where all the membranes had blocked up. Just give it a flush and maybe check the airbox and clean any excess out of there too. Makes a huge difference!

Planning on doing a flush/oil change over the easter weekend on my 6n to hopefully quieten thetappets down a bit!

Anybody know what the best oil is for the 6n engines? I've got the 1.4 8v.

Cheers!

The breather pipe is linked to the air filter box which sits on thr throttle, it usually gets gunked up with an oil and water mixture from short journeys, so pouring some flush down there wont do any harm, the pipe has about a 1.4 diameter and is entering the filter box at about 45 degrees from the drivers side.

But most of the oil flush is poured into where you would pour the oil top up, once done run engine for half hour pour all old oil out from the bottom of the car jacked up, once empty take oil filter of with oil wrench. Put new oil filter on, tighten the oil bolt back on and fill up with your new oil.

I recommend Castrol GTX 10w-40 I think, or the even better Castrol Edge 5w-30, which I am planning on trying on next. Hope this helps.

Sorry Hardcore i never saw your question! Bought the breather for about 4 quid from my local VW spares place. I only replaced it because the problem persisted, and a lot of other parts were being replaced on the oil line at the same time so it was worth doing.
