Removing bump strips

Hey,

I'm going to attempt to remove the bump strips off my 6n on saturday and I have some questions.

1. How long does it take with a decent hairdryer?
2. Will it leave behind any holes or gaps?
3. Are there any solvents I can use to remove any excess glue without damaging the bodywork?

hey all i did was pull em off with a credit card( an old one incase it bends alot) then rubbed white spirits into the excess glue, scraped off wat i could then repeated agen until the glue was gone, took probs about 3 - 4 shots before it all went.... mine left a wierd mark wenever i washed it but went away after a few washes.... now looks the beezwax after its washed

Try using AG tar remover on the paintwork underneath to help get off the stubborn bits

Tar remover or mehtanol spirit as I found. Damp a cloth in it, out it on glue and leave for a 30secs. Start scrubbing and it comes off a treat.

I'm going to give this a go tomorrow, no doubt i'll be worrying about people opening their car doors onto mine!

So,

Heat with hairdryer until glue becomes sticky
Pull off
Rub white spirit into the existing glue to loosen
Wipe off with cloth
Use autoglym tar remover to get rid of any final bits

Sounds about right, such as simple thing to do but can't afford to mess anything up lol.

If you're careful you can "tease" the glue so it stays on the strip and comes off your car instead. just takes more time but then there's less to wipe off afterwards.

also, the bump strips don't really protect you car from other people that much. they protect more from when you open your own door.

how many parking dents have you seen at that level? most car doors will hit your car above the bump strip - especially rear doors

so don't worry about it!

Good point, looks closely and it's not mint anyway so I doubt a couple more will make any difference anyway

Well insurance is due in a couple of months so i've not got anything major planned (I was considering getting the RXii's in the FS section but I can't really afford them at the moment).

I'm going to look into suspension soon, and have a blowout july time were i'll buy the BBS RXii's, coilovers and front and rear 16V bumpers

I can't really think of anything that doesn't require anything expensive, I was going to paint the rear drums black with hammerite and the front calipers red but there's no point in it's current state as you wont be able to see it

Anyone got any suggestions on any other cheap mods?

Colour code your door handles, and get that splitter back to black!
