looks great, I might do a slightly cheaper alternative with just the 2 6x9s I already have, with a sub in the middle in the parcel shelf.

Ive seen some 6x9 box enclosure things on ebay, would it work/be any good to fit another 6x9 under each front seat?

If your already getting a sub and want boot space DONT GET 6X9s!!

You'll get alot better range and response with 6.5" components in the front, plus they space save.

get the components and rid the 6x9s as they don't mix sounds with subs. if you want boot space then consider a small sub you can make a housing for where the first-aid kit goes or the other side.

6x9's give mid and lower range sound using the surrounding space (don't need inclosures). This then makes most of your sounds come from the rear of the car, which ain't good. If you use 6x9's you don't use subs. If you use subs then theres no need for 6x9's to give bass and lower range. They only need to give mid-range sounds, so instead of using them you use mid-components for that purpose.

You never use subs and 6x9's together to build an install, it defeats both their purpose once used together. You use one or the other depending on the build your going for.

I only use Xplode 6x9's, which still needs wiring up to a small amp. Standard mids in the doors with tweeters included in the dash speakers. Therefore all higher frequency comes from the front, mids in the middle of the car and lower frequencies from the rear. Not too fussed with sounds but atleast its decent for listening to Dolby surround

I'm gonna have to disagree; components and 6x9s give a general improved / beefier souind, but won't produce anything like the same depth of bass as a sub. With the addition of a sub, you still get the tonal range from the 6x9s along with the bass of the sub. Subs and 6x9s should only not be used together when you have 6x9s in the parcel shelf and a big sub in the boot, as the air pressure from the sub will nacker the 6x9s.

I agree with Noz, 6X9s are pretty pointless in my eyes.

Subwoofers handle bass alot better than them, and 6.5"s handle mid-range better than them.

The only time they fit in, is if you have a system with no sub and you want a bit more depth, but even then you still need some nice mid-range speakers to handle the mid and treble.

I agree with Joe that 6x9's give the better quality and tonal range (3-way speaker), which is why they are used if subs aren't like myself. One of the points as you pointed out the sub uses the same air as the 6x9's, both fighting to push the soundwaves everywhere messing up the sound. They are also meant for the rear of the car so why have them there if your using a sub? This is why when using a sub in the rear you should use mids for mid-range in the middle of the car.

Thanks for all the great knowledge and advice, so useful!

So what is the best way, using minimal space (and skill!!) to improve the sound?

Wish I knew as much about this as you guys!

Thanks

Andy

Get some 6.5 components for the front. Get a good set, don't go cheap, that way you won't have to go there again.

If you feel you have the space to get a sub, get one. And to space save you could attach your amp to the back of the sub box.

If you can't find room for a sub, get 6.5" coxials for the rear doors,

You can easily make a box to fit either side of your boot, theres a few specificly made to save space. You should be able to make a small box and fit it within the first aid kit box area of your boot. It'll take the least amount of space within the boot if you opt for a sub. If not, get a set of 6.5's as Tim suggested.

If you do want tonal range, get high-end 6x9's fitted to an amp. Don't use the standard parcel shelf, make a proper one with mdf.... etc
