I've just been ringing around the garage as my polo is due it's MOT & Service this month, MOT was £45, servicing was £99. Not too bad I thought. Until I read the service book, turns out it's due a cambelt change. £145 for cambelt. So were talking £290 already (reasonably for the items). Then it may need brake disks and pads at front changing (£160) so we're talking £449 all together. The car only set me back £750!
It's bad enough as it is for the insurance in may (£1000), thank god it hasn't got tax due!
HOW MUCH!?!?!?
Why not have a go at a few things yourself? Disks and pads are quite straight forward. Changing the plugs, oil and filters is also something you can easily do.
Probably best to get someone to do the cambelt, as you have to drop the engine a bit to get better access. It's also worth getting the water pump changed at the same time, as the newer ones use metal fins, not plastic.
The servicing and brakes are covered quite well in the Haynes manual. When you've done it once, it will be much easier next time.
