POLO 97/98 1.0L WATER/ANTIFREEZE LEAKAGE, CAN NE1 HELP????

I have a 98 polo 1.0L after about 150 miles (1week) the water bottle goes from maximum to empty and the water light comes on, on the dash board. The temperature gauge is fine staying at the middle so there must be a leak but I need to know where the most common areas to check for leakage are, as there are no obvious signs. Does anyone know what could cause this?

Loose o ring?

Checked oil cap to see if theres a huge build up of gunk on there, if so head gaskets?

check ur cars carpets for water too, maybe the heater matrix

could be the start of a water pump failure, the symptons where the same on my 1.4cl.
