Hey people, im a new member. Im a Club polo member and found this thread and seems a great site to be a part of.

Ive got a mk5 Red Polo Gti. very impressed with it, apart from the recent gearbox news, which seems to be a big talking point on this forum.

looking at getting it repaired, then getting my wheels refurbed, other than that my car is mint, i will get some pics up soon.

Welcome to the forum, you won't find a better information site on Polo GTI's on the web than here. Don't let the gearbox put you off, mine is on its way out but I'm just trying to blatantly ignore it :D

cheers everyone for a nicer welcome than i recieved from club polo lol.

Mouse_GTI, what noises are you getting from your gearbox? mine is very odd and to be honest even tho ive been told its the gearbox, im almost certain its only the clutch and theyre trying to blag me out of 900quid.

Very faint high pitched grinding or winding noises, mainly in 5th. You can just hear them when your driving and they are definately coming from the gearbox

Have you not got a trusted garage you can take it to for a proper examination? What kind of noises are you getting?

Ive taken it to a garage which ive always used, the old boy is an old vw mechanic and opened up his own garage. Im getting it checkoed over and some more quotes to make extra sure im not getting done over.

I can only explain the noise as sounding like a warped disc rubbing on pads, except it comes from the drivetrain as it dissapears completly when the clutch is down and only sounds real bad when the clutch is at bite point, other than that you cant hear it hardly at all.
Also if i rest my foot on the clutch without applying any pressure i can hear it, if i dont i cant hear it anymore, and as i have always covered the clutch while driving im training myself not to so i cant hear it :D

If it is the gearbox, would i be stupid to drive it till something actually breaks, i.e gears stop working, gears get stiff etc.?

cheers

That sounds alot like your box mate. Your ok to drive for now but I'd get it checked out and fixed asap. If it were to go, you'll be entering another whole world of trouble!
