Climate Control / Air con problem?

Post by Tom. »

My girlfriend has just bought a Polo GTi, and I have noticed there seems to be a problem with the air con.

When you switch the air con on (by either setting the climate to 'AUTO' or turning 'ECON' off), as far as I am aware the engine fan should turn at a slow quiet steady pace to draw air through the air con radiator.

When turning this on in her car, the fan does not move, but after about 20 seconds it spins up to a fast audible pace for around 10 seconds and then repeats this process. This is not correct as far as I know?

Can anyone shed ant light on this and what parts needs replacing/cost etc?

I've got the manual A/C controls so can't really help I'm afraid :(

But welcome to the forums and hopefully someone will be able to help with your problem soon!!

Cheers

i get the same problem with my car, but mine starts to go at a fast pace even if i only jus turn on the climate control, even if i have it on 'hi' or just on the demister, as soon as i turn it on, i hear the fan go really fast for about 10 seconds and then come back on after like a few seconds, and it keeps happening, is this normal?

i thought it did this as it regulates the temperature so it is giving it a "boost" then settling back down. well thats my understanding. not had any problems with mine

I am pretty sure it is a relay or something, thought someone might know some specifics. It is a similar problem that happens on mk4 Golfs apparently. The fan should spin at a constant low speed to draw air through the air-con radiator as far as I know.

I am taking the car down to The Phirm next month for the cambelt, I'll get them to look at it as well.

i asume this is suppost to do this? as climate control basically keeps the interior of the car at a certain temperature so it will try and keep it at that operating temperature so will therefore make the fan faster/slower

If it's the interior fan you speak of then yes, this does vary as it should.

But not the engine/radiator fan, this only operates when the air-con is on and should spin at a slow constant speed to draw air through the air con rad.

i would of thought it would have the same effect as that then? wouldnt you? because i was worried, when i had just started the car the fan would kick in, i got worried, but i then realised it was because my air con was on lol

Well yeah, but the fan should turn on the instant you turn the air con on, not speed up to full speed as if the car was overheating after 20 seconds then stop :?
