1998 POLO 1.4 8 VALVE WILL ANY GEARBOX FIT ??

Hi All im new to VW's my daughter has just purchased a polo 1998 1.4 8 valve with a knackered gearbox code dkf i think!! can any " Tech Heads " out there tell me will any 1.4 golf/polo 5 speed fit even early 1990 models as i have seen several golf ones for sale on ebay . Is there an easy way to spot the right type some ads have said " black end cover " refering to the 5 th gear end plate?? some say "rod change type " any help greatly appreciated simon...

hiya mate, welcome to the site. All the 6N gearboxes should fit, but with each different engine comes a box with different ratios. So for a proper replacement you have to buy the correct gearbox for your engine size.

Thanks Tim, Am i right in thinking 6n is the polo build type if so are golfs refered to the same way im not to bothered about ratios if the box comes from a 1.4 i cant imagine it will be far out cheers for the reply

Yeh the 6N refers to the mark of polo, which is a mark4.

the mark 5 is 6N2

the mark 6 is 9N

and the mark 7 is 9N3, you get the idea
