MOT failed, please advise!

Post by Hollie & Her 6n »

Ok, i've had my mot done today and its failed because

1. nearside headlamp aim beam image kick up to the offside

2. nearside rear reflector(s) not red in colour

3. offside rear reflector(s) not red in colour

4. nearside registration plate lamp shows direct white light to the rear

5. offside registration plate lamp shows direct white light to the rear

6. front anti-roll bar missing

1st three are no problem and the last one is a mistake which we will tell the tester as this model doesn't come with one from the factory! :?

4 & 5 are weird, i have a standard 16v rear bumper with the standard number plate lights, should this of been a fail ?

please help im having it retested tomorrow and maybe commiting murder too!!

Yeh the bulbs can wear out and produce the wrong light, I had this on my old car.

all can be fixed at a very low price, it's all good! 8)

hey Tim, i don't think its a case of the bulbs wearing out, the fault is that the lights are shining outwards ie- towards following traffic.

we tested it last night and its definately not glaring or blinding, but as the lights, bumpers and bulbs are all positioned correctly, and as vw have built them, theres nothing we can do to correct it.

we even phoned Dan's next door neighbour to see what the number plate lights on his mk4 polo are like and they do the exact same thing!

we think the tester was being extremely picky and also a bit of a knob, seeing as he failed it for not having a front ARB when it never came with one from the factory :x

6. front anti-roll bar missing

Ye as you ready said, I would deffo check this as not all 6n's came with one (mine doesn't)

As for the number plate lights, they can't be adjusted, the tester is obviously being a major pr*ck.

Nice looking car by the way.

Ahh i see, sorry I miss-understood. That's ridiculous!!! What an idiot, must have been some personal vendetta he had against you or something. I'd go back and explain the fact that it's fine and even exactly the same as another mark 4 you've looked at. That's not on. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Some tester hate modded cars and get picky about anything cos its been changed from standard. Go back and ask him what the failures mean and if can to point the difference out using another 6n. I don't remember ANY 6n's coming with anti-roll bars so like the others say, his probably being a nob.

He sounds like a total time waster! Anti-roll bars are only standard on 1.6 and diesel models - yawns with sad boring knowledge...

Am I meant to have an anti roll bar then?

Where should it be?

You should have! It connects to both lower wishbones, going around and over the back of the lower engine mount. What year is the car?

It is very weird, we take the car to my local VAG specialists who then take it to the MOT testers for us.
The parts guy at the VAG place, who is a good mate of mine, couldn't believe some of the failure points.
He immediately phoned VW to check the ARB situation, and they confirmed that her model definately didn't come with one from the factory, and they sent us proof of this fact.
Its at its re-test now!

Woohoo, just had a call from Seat saying the car has passed its MOT! My mate, the parts guy at Seat, went with the car to make sure it was tested right and to explain/demonstrate a few things to the tester lol

as for problem sorting:

1. one headlight bulb not fitted quite right, so this was adjusted.
2. my mate half stuck on a couple of reflectors, and took them off when
it had been tested.
3. as above
4. my mate took one of the number plate lights out to show the tester that nothing else could be done with them, and he reluctantly passed it.
5. as above
6. initially he said he thought the ARB was missing as the car has all the fixing point etc ready for one. He accepted the mistake.

I'm pleased that i don't have to go and stop Hollie from commiting murder now
