Damaged paintwork - suggestions please. (pics)

This is the result of the accident I was involved in last week.

I'm still awaiting a repsonse from the insurance company regarding repairs.
I was wonderinf ig there's something I could do in the meantime to prevent rust setting in etc? I thought about coating the chips with vaseline, would this protect the paintwork until it's repaired.

In case the insurance try and write off the car with it being an older car (96 plate), what sort of prices would I be looking at to get the damage repaired?

My back door was also damaged, it doesn't close properly at the top, is there a way I could fix this myself, or will I need a new door?

It shouldn't take that long for the insurance company to sort it out (I know they take a long time, but i doubt it will be left long enough for rust to settle in), the warp on the door is quite large, I'm guessing you would need a new one.

try a breakers for a door in the same colour, search 24/7 spares i find them to b good, vaseline will protect the paint but like tim says rust wont set in that quick. if insurance do write it off id reccomend buying it back off the insurers and fixing it yourself.

So how does that work?
They value it at £x and pay me out that amount? Would I then buy it back for the amount they paid out? How would I go about insuring the car again, would they same company insure it even if they wrote it off?

yeah theyll value the car then if u buy it back its like 30% or something, cant remeber, i did it on my last polo, was an insurance CAT D write off, which yours will be if they do write it off, they valued the car at £1800, i baught it back off them for roughly £400 i think and then they paid out the rest (£1400) then im pretty sure you have to re MOT it and then its fine. with a CAT C u have to mot and vic check it but u dont with a cat d.

Once you've bought it off them, repaired it, MOT'd it again, your existing insurance will cover it again?

I paid £800 for mine last month, what are the likely to value it at?
