I'm going to be changing my oil in the next week or so.
I'm wanting to know which is the best oil to put in my car? It's done 104k and I believe your meant to get the best oil when a car has done that many miles. What's recommended for a polo?
The best oil for a 1.4 CL?
Wouldn't say older engines would need better oils to huge extents and at 100,000 I wouldn't call it old, all that matters is that the oil is changed regularly with the right viscosity. The only difference between oil is the quality but I would say there is a very slim margin, unless you buy halford stuff which is terrible. The main difference between oils is the extra additives within the oil such as Gastrol GTX or Castrol Edge.
As for recommendation you will need 10w-40 viscosity oil of any of the following brands:
Castrol (standard, GTX or Edge)
Comma
Mobil
You can use lower viscosity's, such as on the Castrol edge it recommends 5w-30 for the MK4 Polo but that stuffs expensive. I used Castrol in the past and now with comma, only difference I've spotted is price
Do not use halford stuff its terrible its like marmite in the engine and the engine hates it!

Never commented on the additives that the more expensive stuff have like castrol magnetic, they have additives that form bonds around metal parts of the engine and add a layer of protection supposedly, also on older cars the quality of the oil should be recommended at least on Castrol GTX quality as minimum standard. I talked to a mechanic in the past and he said 100,000 is not much start using the better stuff at 150,000miles, but starting early does not hurt. However Castrols website recommends Castrol GTX after 70,000miles
Some oils are long term and don't need such frequent changes, I think , castrol edge is used on long term services at VW but don't quote me on that (but the more often you change oil the better for the engine).
I personaly use the Comma stuff, but in the performance catagory (in the big silver bottles) however I did use there slightly cheaper stuff (in yellow bottles) on 104,000 on my 1.0 and it was great.
