I have been looking at a GTI & know that the gearbox is a major weakpoint. Is there anything you can do when a box is refurb'd to stop it self-destructing in the future? And could you retrofit a 6-speed box into the polo?
Welcome to the forum. If you use the "search" function this topic has been covered lots in the past. To cut a long story short, basically without spending lots and lots of money you cannot fit a 6 speed box into the car (even the lupo, as it has a different linkage - i think). As far as maintaining it goes - just make sure the gearbox oil is changed regularly, and try not to drive it hard when its cold - that the best advice I could give. Hope that helps.

Never heard of a gearbox oil cooler? That may help alot actually, the box can get very notchy on a hot engine.
You get a gearbox oil cooler on a lot of 4x4 automatics, i think on a manual 'box you may have to put a small electric oil pump in the system. Easy to do tho'. Plus if it helps eliminate part of the problem then well worth it!
Don't think it would be too difficult to fit, especially if you had 'box out, if you want braided fittings speak to http://www.h-e-l.co.uk/ as they were great when I had braided lines on off-road racers, even tho' they mainly do bikes they do bespoke stuff to
Sounds very interesting, I'll have to speak to my local garage next time I'm down there to see what their view are on it, sadly I don't have the cash or knowledge to find out first hand though
