hi guys,
alot of 16v owners are always saying that their gerbox has failed or is on its way out!
What are the symptoms and what can be done at early stages to cure the problem?
what causes failure in the 1st place?
just wanting to know as im looking for a new one soon.....

^^ Exactly as Tim said. Only got my car back from the garage after getting my gearbox re-conditioned which costs a mini fortune. Buying a box is cheaper but you'll be lucky to find one when your in need of one!
Mine used to whine after been driving a long journey or when i've thrashed it for a while. Always thought it was the engine itself till it got more noticable and realised after depressing the clutch the noise went away. Also changed the pedal box due to this problem so thought my clutch was crap putting stress on the pedal box.
However last Thursday it blew big time and sounded like all the metal pieces where banging around inside the box and the whining was unbarable to hear, which stayed even when pressed the clutch.
Now its fixed after a £550 bill but the fixed gearbox has made my clutch featherlight and theres no more creaking from the pedal box showing all the problems where due to the box.
So be sure not to thrash the box like I did, bad gear changes OR silly stuff like wheel spins etc (which I never did anyway). As Tim mentioned always maintain oil too, which should help. For some reason 16v and the GTi boxes seem to be the most prone to damage.

It's because they are normal gearboxes with higher ratios gears put in so they were never really designed for the extra work the replacement gears put through it.
Mine hasn't gone yet (touch wood) but the bearings did go which cost a bomb to fix. The symptoms for this seemed to be a whining whether you depress the clutch or not.
