My Polo 6n2 - Horrid Gearbox

Post by Jamoygti »

So, got the car last saturday, and okay, its done 77,000 miles, but still only average for a 2001 car...and i'm driving it daily at the moment as you do, but i'm constantly aware that the gearbox is the most dreadful gearbox that i've ever experienced in a car ever. My last car was a modified '96 Rover 100, which actually had a peugeot gearbox, but was an absolute joy once it had warmed up...i learnt to drive in a Ford Focus, and as you would expect, gearbox was fantastic. I've driven a Golf GTI mk4, my dads infact, gearbox very smooth, exactly what i would expect, even my mate's Grande Punto has a pretty good box, as well as my other mate's C2 GT, which is a bit notchy, but it is a citroen...but none of those compare to the gearbox in my polo. I often have to double de-clutch to get it into gear, which may be any gear actually at any time. Sometimes it's fine, but most of the time i pain in the arse. I have to use so much force to get it into gear sometimes, it just feels wrong!

So, do you reakon my gearbox is a little bit thrashed maybe? needs a re-con?

Thanks :)

The gearboxes in the 6N2 are generally s**t, the only things you can do (short of a re-con or new box) is change the gearbox oil, and adjust the clutch. I did both, and after 100 miles or so it got alot better. The hotter the engine the worse it gets, but new box oil really does make things smoother.

It's something we all have to live with really.

oh right! gutted. isn't that strange tho...the 'box in the Lupo GTI is awesome... :?

yeah, it does get worse when it gets hotter, start it cold, and i'm thinking oh right, it's fine, but then, later on it doesnt want to go into 2nd as i pull away from a roundabout...! lol

gearbox oil, okay then, i'll give it a try! thanks alot!

No problem. Yeh the box really does let the whole car down, I'll probably do nothing more to the engine (bar my air filter) now because of strain on it.

First time I drove my GTI I was shocking by how notchy the gearbox was. Luckily when I went for a drive the rest of the car made up for it :D
