changing my gearbox//?

the previous owner of my 1.4 8v polo sold me his car after he replaced the gearbox..i looked at the reciept and it was sayin mklll petrol gearbox!?..but since then it has blown and i have replaced it with 1 i bought from the scrappy..but the thing is that its not the same code so now it revs like mad as soon as i get to 80-90mph...so i want to get a new 1...

i was thinkin if i get a 16v gearbox into it..would it give me more top end?..
my old gearbox did let me get to 117mph altho its a 8v..so i was thinkin maybe if i get a 16v it can do the same thing?..

I wouldn't try any different 'boxes in it, find out the part number for the original 1.4 8v box and stick to it. All boxes (although being the compatible) have different gear ratios, and are setup to that specific engine. If the 16v was better suited for the 8v also I'm sure VW would have put the same box when it came out of the factory

oo i c...so even though my gearbox is maxing out the revs at 90 or so mph it may not be maxing out on another engine for a 1.4 8v as its made specifically for that engine ?

your revs aremaxing out because the wrong box was in it. if you get a 1.4 8v box it wil sort itself out.

I can't remember what getting a 16v box will do, but it won't be as good as the 8v box and they are also very hard to come across

u mean gettin a box with exact same box code not just a 1.4 8v box?
