I was actually meaning the off road thingie - what's up with having two model names with a very similar pronounciation??

Just confuses people like me.

Anyway, I think the only thing the Touran has going for it gives some idea of what the Golf V's dashboard will be like and a very small, shark-fin esq. ariel - doesn't say much for the product, really.

the touran is the competitor to the vauxhall aglia and is a little bigger but similar in looks and the toureg is basically a rebadged porche cayenne
and wait till you see a toureg in black they look amazing

Hangonhangon, the Touran is the competition for the Zafira, not Agila. Agila's are based on Corsas, not Astra's AFAIK.

The TouAreG is the new SUV, similar name, different beast. Confusing indeed.

Isn't the Agila a rebadged Suzuki Wagon??

At least the Japanese know what to call their cars!! :lol:

I heard the other day that 1 in 5 of cars sold in Western Europe are from VAG.

So, if you assume that Ford and GM must be two other big players, how many manufacturer are actually left?

I mean (all AFAIK):

VAG = Skoda, Seat, VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley
GM = Vauxhall/Opel, Mazda, Saab, Subaru, Isuzi, Suzuki
Ford = Ford, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover
Renault (sort of) = Nissan
Peoguet(sp?) (sort of) = Citroen

This isn't right, but you get the idea...

Anyone want to improve on this list??

Hmm, diging around reveals:

Ford = Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover

GM = Buick, Caddilac, Chervolet, EV1 (what's this??), GMC, Fiat (news to me!!), Subaru, Isuzu, Suzuki, Holden, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Opel, Pontaic, Saab, Saturn, Vauxhall

VAG = "Volkswagen brand group" = VW, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti
VAG = "Audi brand group" = Audi, Seat, Lamborghine
(where's Porsche?? - these brands are from the latest public accounts)

Returning to topic, if Porsche aren't part of VAG, how do you explain the Toureag vs. Cayenne??

That just leaves specialists (e.g. TVR), Pacific Rim (e.g. Kia, Daewoo) and Japanese (i.e. Toyota/Lexus)

So, there's not really much choice out there at all.

vw own bugatti and fiat own ferrari :shock:
i was having the same discussin with a mate ages ago and it lasted for days
i think kia are part of toyota and lexus are the high end of toyota
nissan are owned by someone i think
i think auti have masserati
aston martin and tvr are still independant (however i get a feeling that AM might be part of ford now
and rolls are ford too i think
on that last pic the gap is cos of chassis flex which can cause the windscreen to explode on some 4x4s

Yeah - torsion through the chassis is kind of what I was hinting at. If you look at the bottom of the doors, along the sill, everything's find down there, so it 's probably just the angle of the photo.

Once upon a time, I opened the door on a 3 door Fiat Uno while changing a tyre - never again!!!

Wouldn't shut until all four wheels were back on the road. :lol:

I think Nissan and Renault are in a "strategic alliance", but are still seperate companies??

Should we we cut this off before it gets too involved??

Going even more off topic, did you know that Toyota are one of the biggest house builders (actually "house manufacturers") in Japan??

I could explain, if you wish...

its even worse on rusty old saloorns like renult25s cos with them sometimes the doors just pop open when you get them on the ramp lol

Couple of added remarks;

Lexus is indeed the high-end brand made by Toyota.

Nissan is partially owned by Renault and they are also responsible for the turnaround in style and sales @ Nissan.

Maserati is still owned by Fiat.

Aston Martin is part of Ford.

Porsche is legally independent, but shared the development cost of the Touareg with Porsche.

Rolls Royce is part of BMW, Bentley is part of Volkswagen. BMW also has the Mini brand but bumped Rover to Ford a while back.

Fiat is still independent, even though they work together with several other auto makers. There were rumours of VW buying Alfa Romeo from Fiat a while back, don't know if this is true or not.

Daimler/Chrysler also have an interest in SsangYong, a Korean auto maker.

Peugeot is of course part of the PSA group, together with Citroën.
