Idea's wanted! styling!

Post by vw-po-low »

Right, having problems decideing on styling. my mind keeps wondering onto 16v bumpers but then adding a curpa or some style seat or other dub splitter. and smoothing it. It's just somthing im toying with. I'm also wanting mark 5 rear lights, i know they don't fit stright on, is there much to do? to make them fit, or wiring?

Also, door strips, how much of a mess do they leave once removed? Bodyshop job?

Any idea's at all just give me a shout, thanks. :D

hi po-low,
If you look in the diy guides there is one for converting 6n to mk5 lights. A couple of holes to enlarge, a bit of filing of light housing & small amount of wiring.
Door strips are allegedly easy to remove, a similar technique to rear badge remaval is used as stuck on the same. Just need patience to do a good job!
Looking at similar jobs to do on my motor, so have been looking around!!

from wat i remember u can remove the side strips urself theyre just held on with glue u but not sure exactly how u get them of i believe a heat gun has to be used to melt the glue but not totally sure.

as for the lights also heard if u want the mk5 ones u need the bulb holders to.

some people get the 16v bumpers and gti splitter from the mk5 whcih does look good but needs a little bit of work but nothing major. apart spraying the bumpers everything else u can do urself.

also go for clear indicators front and side.

An alternative is a kettle and boiling water for the badge and strips.

Basically you need to heat the sidestrips ie use a heat gun or similar. Once removed you'll have left over glue which is easy to remove using methanol spirit or similar, all you need is a rag and some elbow grease. making sure the glues soft enough to strip off is a must or you'll remove paint to!

I also remember you need the bulb carriers with the lights too so make sure you do.

16v bumpers and GTi splitter is a great combination although done to death so it depends if you don't mind that being common! If you want you can fiddle with the 16v bumper to give it some individual flavour  I'd suggest keeping the 8v bumpers for that very reason though

You can also paint the centres as I suggested in shadow chrome and to colour-code go with a gloss black roof too.

Update! (no photos yet)

My mission today was to remove the bump stips, polo badge and de- wiper. All was done with success. I do how ever have a light white mark on the n/s passengers door where the strip was. I may paint my VW badges gloss black too. It's looking more stunning as i progress, thanks for the info. Very helpful! Bump strips came off a treat but getting the glue off took me and my girl aggeeess (used Auto Glym Intense tar remover)

I washed the polo after and gave her a rub down with my leather .... then it rained

lol rains our worst enemy! Methanol spirit would have been much easier then Auto Glym as it breaks up the chemicals! anyway, get some pics up when you can.
