"new" coilovers........

today i fitted my coilies i got second hand and have noticed a couple of things:

1. altho i measured the distance from the bottom of the thread to the bottom of the lower nut and both sides front are the same the driver side is actually lower then the passenger side..... i have actually raised it so its near enough the same now. are coilies made for specific sides? so u got one made specifically for the front driver side and one for the front passenger side?

2. people say about letting them settle in. also when settling in does it lower the car more? does this only go for new ones or second hand ones to?

3. when getting the camber done is there only a certain distance the camber adjustment as standard will go? when u lower it more like 100mm or so is there some sort of extension or something u need to buy to get the camber done properly?

i think thats it on the coilies for now...........

also does anyone know where i can get a gti drinks holder for my car? i wanna put one in my car.

also been thinking, might get rid of my angel eyes and get some other new lights, nice bright ones..... any ieads?

All suspension has to settle after refitting - thats just normal

GTI Drinks holder is a dealership job. A full drinks holder will cost you close to Â£70 - its not a cheap setup. Each holder is Â£26 and then you have to get the surround and front pieces for each holder too.

Get 6000k HIDs on a set of normal polo headlights. Its a very good way to boost your light out put without a silly look.

Agreed with the 6000k HIds, they'll look great.

In terms of camber settings you could get shims, they increase negatvie camber though so the wheels tuck into the arch more.

means i would have to buy the front light units again as i had to remove and damage parts of mine to get the angels to fit.... where would i get the 6000k HIds from? wat does negative camber mean? i dont mind yet about how low the wheels are i just watnt hem to be flat on the ground and facing forwards instead of wang eyed. wat are these shims for and whrere would i get them?

Negative camber is where the top of your wheels tilt into the body of the car...

the angels didnt come with motors so i had to use the mtors of my lights. not perfect but works. gotta get the beam allgnment done.

wat exactly happens when the coilies "settle"?

do they have to resettle everytime u higher or lower them?

do polos have onle a certain distance u can adjust the camber to if the car is really low or can u lower it any amount u want and get the camber set properly still?

i got my camber and tracking done today. it was lower and then i thought i should higher it to get it done so wen i go tthere and they did it i asked them if they know anywhere where i could get it done if it was lower and thy said they could do it as they have a flat ramp theyd use from mots. so i think im gonna lower it more then i can get it done by them again. not sure if im gonna get new 16" inch alloys on it forst or just lower it.

i originally had it so low th front splitter was only three qarters of a coke can high.

By "settling" all it means is allowing the suspension components to adjust to actually being on the car and driven. What it usually means is that the car will end up sitting lower than when they were initially fitted due to weight/forces from it being driven.

The front camber setting on a 6N2 is usually determined by the amount of play in the bolts connecting to the bottom of the damper, so there is only limited adjustment potential there.

do u know wat the lowest u can go with 15" alloys on and 195/45 tyres is befor it gets to low for the camber to be set properly? unless theres a way u can give it more play in the camber? i.e some sort of longer blots or extensions etc.

as i said befor, do coilies have specific sides they have to go on or do the front ones go on the front either side and same with the back?

Yeh there are certain things you cna do to push more camber adjustments out, I can't remember the term for them tho so couldn't search on here sorry!

I don't know how low it is, at a guess I'd say around 100mm? I wouldnt worry about it too much though, you gotta love a bit of negative camber

negative is good cause the wheels sit high in the arch but then i dont wanna wear the tyres continously.

when i originally lowered it the car was so low at the front u had to put your hand upinside the arch to reach the top of they tyre.....

so far for Â£130 second hand coilies im impressed with the ride of them. i think from now on im not even gonna think about springs just buy a whole new coilover set. much better.

but does n e one know if coilies have a specific side for them to go on?
