I picked up my Polo (6n2) yesterday, all was fine until I went out today with my brother, half way to our destination and a warning light lit up. Its the one that looks like an Engine with a small electric bolt through it and the words "Check" below it.
I have had a look in the car manual and it says its a fault with the exhaust emissions or something.
Anyone else had this problem? I am taking it back to where I bought it on monday as I have a 12 month warranty through them. I don't think this is right though, I have only had it a day and it had the center part of the exhaust changed in its MOT this week..
I had this happen to mine last year. I knew I needed new spark plugs, so when I changed them the light went out & never came back.
It could be lambda sensor(s), but may be worth having a diagnostics check if you can find somewhere that doesn't cost the earth. I've heard of people with this light on who have got through MOT OK; depends exactly what's causing it to come on of course.
Well since it came on this morning, I have checked a few things on the car. I have noticed that the garage that services and MOT'd my car before I picked it up have put WAY too much oil in the car, when I look at the dipstick, its almost an inch above the max on there. Which according to the manual can damage the Cat.
Also probably unrelated, the brake fluid is also over the max mark.
The light has since gone off, although I did rev it up a lil bit, possibly burnt off a bit of built up oil??
When I first picked up my car (private sale), the guy I bought it from told me the garage had overfilled the engine; I checked & it was about a litre too much! I just drained it & put the right quantity in. This was well before my light came on though, so probably wasn't related. I don't know why, but garages always insist on putting too much oil in & and as you say, it could damage the cat over a long period. It can also cause engine seals to leak. I shouldn't worry too much about your brake fluid level being a bit high; it will go down slightly when the pads wear. If your light doesn't come back on, whatever it was may have cleared, but just keep your eye on it. Were the spark plugs changed by your garage?
Ok, me and my dad emptied out some oil, its now between the marks it should be and also got some brake fluid out but thats still a tiny bit above the "Max" mark but it shall survive.
Will now keep an eye on the levels and hopefully the warning light will not come on again with any luck
Definitely going to get this checked out, the light has come back on now, and it can't be the oil because as previously stated, I have corrected the levels and all is fine with it.
Really not impressed, the car was supposed to have been throughly checked and inspected before handed over to me. So after a week I have had the engine/exhaust check light come on twice, I have had to get some of the oil out and some of the brake fluid. Also while doing the oil I noticed that its really dark, not quite black but very dark and it was supposed to have been changed? I think not...
When the car went in for the cam belt change, I mentioned it and they said they would have a look. When I returned to pick up the car, I questioned it and I was not convinced when they said they had looked and nothing was logged.
According to the guy who did all the work, "it can't be a major fault as it wasn't logged. Possibly just a small valve not opening properly, keep an eye on it"
I took it home and later went out in it and immediately the light came back on. Unfortunately it won't go off now, so as soon as I have chance I am either going to phone the garage up and have another moan at them or ring up the AA and see what the call out guy says.
It's just annoying as I have paid this extra for the 12 month warranty on the car, and yet a few weeks after getting the car and they are already not interested in problems I am having.
I would happily replace the spark plugs and try things like that myself to see if it cures it, but I don't see why I should when I have paid the garage money so that things like this wouldn't happen :/
Any ideas people? besides the obvious of complaining to the garage. maybe a simple fix if anyone has one?
I had this problem with my (recently purchased) GTi at the weekend. Don't know if its the same for you but the problem seemed to go away after I filled up with V-Power, something to do with the RON of the petrol the GTi has.
I don't know if thats the same with mine (1.0E), I have been told a few things to try like spark plugs etc. but I just want the garage to fix it lol... I paid the money for the warranty and they seem to have little interest
Lamda Sensor i'm guessing, what one on yours it will be i dont know!
As ther is 2, one before and one after the cat! mine comes on now and again, i just get it cleared, or as stated try using different fuel, surprisingly it helped my car!
