I'm guessing the larger diameter would require a larger adaptor for the BMC

Ye I would have thought so, although it depends what bend you have in place on the GTI

IMHO, the standard TB is pretty large....The weaklink in the GTI engine is the intake manifold and head...

You would be far better either putting bike throttle boddies on the engine, or fabricating a custom intake manifold to take the standard throttebody.

The gas path through the head could be improved dramatically by matching the ports and cleaning up casting webs as well as balancing the combustion chamber volumes.....

You could even go crazy and put some larger exhaust valves in (if they will fit) along with a better cam.....

After you have done all that you can rejoice in an extra.....3-5hp? But the engine would pickup better and be a bit smoother...
