im now looking to buy a set of wheels for my polo 6n im looking to get a set of 205/45/17 and lowering it 30 mm but i dont want to have to roll my arches so has anyone got 17s with out rolling arches or would i need to get them roled please help thanks ian

With those sized tyres I think you'd certainly have to get them rolled.
IMO 17s are way too big for the 6N and 6N2, 14,s 15s or 16s are the far better options.
If your set on 17s though I'd look at very low profile tyres, something like 35. Width is hard to say without knowing the width of the wheel.
