GTI tailgate handle, replacing it ... how?

Post by Jeff GTi »

anyone give me some pointers on swapping over the tailgate of the 9n3 gti?

i have bought the smoothed handle from vag parts and will be getting it painted shortly when it arrives,

so im trying to gain some knowledge of how to remove the inside tailgate trim and swap them over, can anyone help me, has anyone done it?

i managed to do the drivers door de locking on saturday which makes a cool difference, just got this one left to sort now

cheers in advance

im sure it will be fine to be changed over, my handle only opens about 1 cm as it is now does that sound like yours too?

and as for the de locking the drivers door, its a doddle, ihave a spare blank if you wanted it, just cover postage and a bit of money my way and its yours, just needs painting first

yeah should be a real easy swap then in that case, the handle in primed condition comes in at 42 quid from vag parts inc vat and delivery

but watch this space first, see if the change can be made before everyone else spends money on one only to find it dont work

whitegtipolo, pm'd you back mate

Sounds like a great plan you guys.

Also check out this link http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... 74&start=0 - he has fitted it, assuming himself it might be worth while asking him how to do it?

Looking at fig.26 it looks like a simple case of undoing two torx m6 bolts, sliding the handle out, clicking the new handle plate and reversing the process. I hope its as easy as that.

Now just how to take off the tailgate cover w/o damaging it.

Jeff, please can you post the part number up?

Ive fitted this to my car mate and its not as easy as u think.

The lock part (barrel) will eiva need to be swaped for the part with out the barrel or you have to grind the barrel down to fit. this is because the barrel sticks out flush in the handle with the lock hole so when you put the delocked handle on itll hit and hold the handle out from goin to its natural position.

Its hard to explain but its do-able. If you need any more help i have piks of when i did it, just give me a pm :)

Il pm you when i get time in the week mate as ive got work i a sec, and im going inters 2morro.

You can't just get rid of the barrel cus its part of the opening mechanism to release the catch. removale of the barrel will make the mechanism fall apart.
