As for the gearbox, why not use a 8v gearbox? Your top speed would be limited but acceleration would be faster. As for the hunt for 16v gearbox it's more of looking like a needle in a hay stack as Noz can tell you so you could continue or make do or wait till your 50 and maybe find one
8v to 16v conversion HELP!! NOW WITH PICS
For starters the 16v is so easy to repair from the pictures, body parts would set you back about £150. New headlight would have to be hunted from ebay or scrappy which is an additional £60, then paintwork around £200-250 and a windscreen £200 max.

You can use the gearbox of an 8v people have but many want the car standard in terms of ratios. Like I said you'll be quicker accelerating but you will hit the limiter much earlier. As for the power issue all you got to look at is that not even the 16v & GTi gearboxes can cope with the power, the gearboxes are built the same, the only difference are the little cogs and there ratio's inside it.b-random wrote:Don't think you can use the gearbox from an 8v or alot of valver owners with knackered gear boxes would be doing the same, the ratios are probably different and theirs more power in a valver to a 8 valve 1400!
I would have want to use the standard box with the 16v and not the 8v one as mines a bit whiny anyway! just the fact that the project would have been easier with the whole car- i think i will wait and just spend the money on cosmetics for now and maybe just buy a valver at a later date!
now then - i think its time to hunt for a 16v front bumper to slap on mine with some smoothing.....

well the ratios will be very short compared to the 16v one- yeah it will be wuick on local roads but i do a lot of motorway driving as well-- think im just gonna wait a while.
Josh- that bumper is nice but i prefer the look of the 16v bumper with just the small thin grilles smoothed (upper) and left with the middle mouth and the 2 side grilles.
like this- dont know whos car that is but was at inters 2008
