Drilling air box

Post by polospeed »

I have a 53 reg polo and have been told if I drill some holes in the air box and replace the filter with say a K&N I might get a little more power and a better sound. Only thing is where do I drill the holes? Also where the air inlet pipe is on the engine cover would connecting up a ram air filter to that make any difference? oh its a 1.4 16v 100ps. Thanks guys :?

Hum, do not know about the hole drilling other than to make a noise and suck in water(!), but there was me stating in another posting that the 1.4 16v 100ps was the only engine to get this connecting bit of tubing (or on re-reading your posting, do you mean chucking the complete aircleaner and just using a ram airfilter?) Ah well, you have just proved me wrong! BTW I think the K&N in the real world, only stops you needing to replace the paper filter which will have been designed to do its work very well if changed at regular intervals - sorry (I used to have one in an Orion 1.6Si Ghia - and it made me feel good - but I've got a bit older now and the car was sold before I needed to clean the filter!).

was just wanting to fit a flexi type pipe from the grill to the air inlet on the engine cover, have some plastic funnel thing there all ready but it just goes into the engine bay. Also the engine sounds as if it is sucking air when you press the accelerator. So a K&N filter would not make any difference at all?

There is a replacement part for that "funnel" sort of thing that lets you connect a flexi direct to the aircleaner - I'll check up on ETOS tonight to see if it suits the 1.4 100ps - no point in fitting one from the 1.2 for instance (I see on another posting that one variant of 1.2 has this fitted). You will also need to remove the "horn" piece that is pressed into the aircleaner as well and get a new adaptor. Some times its better to leave well alone unless you KNOW that you are improving things - I am making referance to what effect removing/changing that "horn" would have - turbulance maybe and if so poorer airflow leading to reduced efficiency at certain revs - just a thought - not a definative answer!

I've checked up on the VAG parts list and I was wrong, it is only one of the 1.2 engines that gets this ram-feed arrangement - sorry!

Right, the aircleaner is secured to the top of the engine by four "mushroom" shaped posts - the cleaner has four hollow "bungs" that when you force the cleaner down they pop over the mushroom posts. So to remove the cover start from the front and grab the aircleaner by the front at each side and firmly rock it and attempt to lift it - eventually the front will lift up - repeat this with the rear. Watch out for any pipes and remove them - one on RHS IIRC. To refit it carefully locate it in the correct position and press down firmly - remembering to refit any pipes.
