Gearbox HELP!!!!!!!

Post by Chrissyshot6 »

Hello,

Got a 1998 1.6 GL, petrol polo, and the gearbox has given up. I'm trying to get a new one, but have been asked is it's a cable or a rodshaft.

Any ideas? (even though I love cars I can't bloomin' see it!)

Thanks

Chrissy

If it's the gear linkage they are on about, chances are it connected via a single rod (mine was), the clutch will be by cable, but that you may need to check. Not sure if polo boxes came with a hydraulic clutch.

What dose your clucth feel like? I'm quite certen they are cable. Stretched, adjustable, Linkage should also be adjust able, but i'm not positive on that. Do you struggle in all gears? or certen ones? if it lets you into any gear at all.

"Linkage should also be adjustable" unfortunately, that's what I thought about mine, the gear linkage itself it not adjustable, as far as I could see. The clutch cable however is adjustable, you can slacken or tighten the two nuts at the end of the cable where it connects to the gearbox.

When you say "and the gearbox has given up.", exactly what do you mean, is it difficult to get into gear, is the box making a strange noise etc.

I found out the hard way, tried for hours trying to adjust the linkage only to find its keyed, so doesn't need any adjustment.
