Polo cuts out when its raining

Post by martinwill »

My S reg 1.4 polo cuts out completely when it rains usually as i pull up at a junction but yesterday it did it whilst motoring. It doesnt splutter or cough it just cuts out immediateley as if i had turned the ignition off which makes me think its an electrical problem. When its dry its fine.
have tried spraying all contacts with wd40 but no diffrent. Anyone got any ideas on the problem, and any pointers on where to look.
The problem is intermitant so will be hard to test for but happens at least once or twice when raining. Starts up straight away after cutting out.

Are the revs irratic like they drop whilst coming to a stop or press the clutch?

If so then the issue's been worsened by the rain. I have the problem but for some reason it happened more after the rain last night even if I had driven my car 3hrs before without a hitch!

No the revs are not eratic it just cuts out instantly. So far only when it rains. but reading posts cutting out is a common problem often due to the throttle body needing cleaning but i cant see how rain affects this.
have tried spraying the coil with wd40 but it still happens.
Was told today to get seadoo jet ski water repelant spray, apparently its the dogs nads and does not evaporate like wd, so will try and get a tin.
Any futher surjestions please post. as its a head scratcher.

Check the ignition side of the electrics, check for cracks and lose wires, connectors, sounds like your getting a short, but it's strange that the car is starting up again.
