A respected garage has diagnoosed that the cylinder head gasket has gone on our little 1.0E Polo 2000Model. The temp gauage is falshing and there is oil in coolant. Cars very sluggish and 38mpg at best.
They have quoted £495 and if head needs re-shimmed extra £100. Does this sound right.
Should the head gasket go at 34,000 miles?

I have just been on to JBS Auto Designs (www.jbsautodesigns.co.uk) and they think that at your milage it is unlikely to have just failed.
Has it been driven hot (ie temperature gauge higher than normal)?
They think that if it is a gasket it will require a skim of the head, a new gasket and new head bolts.
This should be around £350 - £400 plus VAT
However, it could just be leaking coolant!
