Engine problem...stuttering

First noticed this while i was down southend when my mate in a clio and my bro decided to rev there engines while crawling along the front, i decided to out do them ( as i have a back box) and when i did the car basically sounded f****d, in low revs it would gargle then catch up and rev, then i'd go to do it again, now worried my car is f****d and it would be fine...

Well yesterday whilest out driving i noticed that mainly in the lower gears it would do it again, gargle amd hesitate then sudden open up and work fully, like it was laggin...then boost up, problem is i dont have turbo

Ive taken my airfilter box off and had a look and it does look dirty compared to one in a pic Tim posted, could this be down to it??

I checked the spark plugs as recenlty it has been running rather doggish, and my brother has the same size engine same wheels only diffrecne is i have a backbox, and he flew past me on the motorway.

Please help....

Have you got any leaks in the pipeworks along the way including the backbox? The pressure loss could be one of the causes if thats what happened.

According to my Haynes, 'underneath the vehicle, to the rear of the fuel tank'!

Basically after breaking down last night i've narrowed it down to either fuel pump, fuel filter or injecters, all easily fixed and cheap. but a pain in the arse!!!

I know this might sound random, but, do you keep your petrol tank quarter full & above, or do you drive on the fuel warning light?

i've the same problem but im also cutting out. Already replaced my fuel pump, easy job. Still have a few things to change. Fuel filter is one of them. Injecters and maf sensor and even my map sensor.

Erm no longer then 1/2 hour. cost would depend on weather up put a Vw one on or somthing none orginal. their only a simple filter, fixing bracket and a pipe in and out with directional arrows.

I'd change the filter first, it's without doubt gonna be the culprit! I had a 3.5 V8 motor a while ago, put an brand new electric fuel pump on it (with its own filter!) & the pump jacked witin 250 miles, cos it got crud in it. Put an inline filter in straight after, no probs.

Moral to that is, you'll be surprised how much crud your filter stops, & its probably gone passed its best & now throttling your fuel flow!

And once u've done that, run some redex, or similar thru' to help clean the crud out of your fuel system.

i misread the question i got my fuel pump off ebay, loads cheaper then VW cost me like £37 deliverd. infact i got two you can have my other for £30 never used still boxed.

Remove the rear seats, undo the pannal behind the o/s via 3 screws
Remove 2 pipes via clips, and remove the plug.
Undo the pump cap its threaded.
then remove 4 wires and two pipes off the pump, take note to where you took them from
Remove the pump via anoither 3 screws and pull out.
remember the pump is summerged in the tank so there will be fuel
(use a well ventelated area, the fumes are bad)
CXhange the little filters overs on the pump and the pump cap
(build up before putting backin)

and do the whole process the other way, just take note to where pipes and wires came from, i wrote mine down as i went along. Will take you no longer then 1/2 to replace the pump.
