Exhaust problems :(

Post by DanOliver »

Hey guys and girls,

My car recently developed a hole, which I'm told is behind the heat shield surrounding the CAT.

I have contacted Quikfit who quoted me highest £225 and another local garage that quoted me £328...

This I personally think is a complete rip off.. so I plan to try and get hold of a catalyst myself and with some help hopefully from a friend have a go at fitting it.

Could anyone give me some idea how hard this will be and if I could possibly do it on my own?

Cheers :)

Personally unless it is a back box I would use someone else to do it. In theory it is easy - find a cat off eBay and then undo some bolts, stick the new exhaust on. but this is rarely the case - bolts can be seized, it's awkward to get to, it's all friction fit so also a pain in the ass to do.

It can be done, but be prepared for a lot of swearing! best to stick some wd40 / sx90 on the bolts the day before you try.

nothing to lose eh?

I'd agree with David, jobs like this in thoery are pretty straight forward. but it's never the case and you end up spending twice as long as you thought would. If your strapped for cash though.....

Well this is the thing.. if I really did limit myself this month and go another whole month with no money I could get it done at quikfit.. but I really would rather not do that.. So it would be nice to have a go myself.

Alex P has kindly offered to take a look at it first in case I am wrong about it being the cat.. maybe if its not as bad as I thought I can just get a hole welded shut :S
