Reset Service Warning

Post by bstardchild »

Hi all

Ok new to this list but with a 1997 1.4CL to replace my aging 1.3 Coupe S I've been cleaning it up (it spent 2 years on a farm - doing god knows what but it was very very dirty!!!!) and I made a big mistake in disconnecting the battery and now I get a service warning every time I turn on the ignition - i checked the book of lies (haynes) and wonderfull I have a 1997 and it says up to 1998 you can re-set it your self just follow a sequence of button pressing - well it's lived up to its name again cos that failed miserably!!!!

Any clues or do i just stump up the cash and take it to a VW dealer

Take the key out then close the door, press the milage reset button, turn the key to ign while still holding the botton, wait till all the ign lights go off i.e. abs check etc, then turn the key off and then relese the button

OK - tried that and still comes up with SERVICE INSP so I guess what I need to find out is how to tell if a late 1997 R plate is actually a 1998 model? Unless someone else has another slant ot the method - the idea of taking the car to a VW dealer everytime the battery gets flat is n't appealing!
