They are good, but o2 have the worst 3g network out of all the networks, and in quite a few places their coverage isnt that great.
I had the original iPhone and i loved it, but the biggest let down was the slow internet and its apalling camera (which they still havent changed grr!
)
It depends how much you want an iPhone, as you can get the same functionality out of things like the Samsung Tocco, Omnia, the new LG thats coming out, and theres a handful of new Sony handsets...alll with 5mp cameras, and HSDPA spec 2 internet which is up to 7.2mbps.
Thought, nothing beats the incredible GUI of the iPhone - simply put...it just works!

I'm in the same position as you Tim.
Have played on a iPhone (3G) and I was very impressed - the internet features are very very good. But like Jason said, the battery is aweful.
I'm holding out to see what the Sony Ericsson X1 is going to be like like, although I have a feeling its going to be dreadfully over priced. I love the fact that I can get an iPhone on a decent contract for free.

I've got a 3G, and had one since the old 2g version came out in US (was out there with a cousin and grabbed one
), and I can say they're awesome. I've got everything in one place.. and I just found out you can plug it into your OBD2 port in the polo and get ECU stats...!
Don't worry about the battery, just about everyone in the world has an ipod charger and you can charge it from your laptop etc. Also your internet on your phone can be wirelessly tethered to your laptop so you can surf 3G internet anywhere (you gotta do some easy tweaking to the phone first). Oh and of course you have GPS built in, so if you get a car holder you can use it as satnav.
The GUI used to be sluggish with lots of contacts/texts, but a recent fix has made it nice and fast
Bad points: crappy camera at night (daytime is actually quite good), you're always scared to scratch it, you can end up spending quite a bit on the appstore.
Hope that helps dude !

Thanks for the replies guys. I more swayed to the internet functions rather than anything else. I basically want a phone that uses proper internet interface like the iphone does and just like any pc and laptop. I hate phone adapted internet.
The down fall to the iPhone is as I know and already said, the crap camera and battery life.
So is there another phone out there for me that has equally great internet functions but perhaps with a better camera?

The SE X1 will have a 3.2 mp camera - not great by todays standards really. It runs the Windows Mobile OS, full slide out QWERTY keyboard.

I used to own brick phones with all this useful stuff but never used it...i like a phone that:
1. makes calls
2. ability to text
3. really cool looking and stupidly expensive..doesnt do much
its got a scratch proof screen and is made from titanium! yum! lol
P.S the camera is s**t & the internet is s**t...probably WAP
