I work at o2 so have dealt with the iPhone 3g for quite a while, I even use it as my demo at work. Advanced apologies for the essay, it's much quicker when telling someone than typing it all out.

Don't forget the negative points as well i.e.
Only a 2mp camera that doesn't have a recording function.
No MMS or bluetooth data transfer - e.g. can't send photos/music to someone else.
Feedback on the 3g reception isn't the best, although we are quoted 80% coverage it doesn't always seem to work that way.
Battery life can be very poor depending on usage, a half battery on my phone won't last my 9-5 shift at work and that's just connected to the 3g network.
The screen is pulse sensitive meaning you HAVE to use skin (Some people prefer a stylus)
Can't edit email attachments e.g. MS word.
Feedback also shows that people generally prefer their old iPhone as Apple have greater "control" over this one.
The GPS function isn't voice so although you could use it as a Satnav, you can't hear directions.
No Flash - yet.

Another option may be the XDA Ignito/HDC (HTC can't remember) Touch diamond. It's got the same sort of features at the iPhone and a better screen ( On par with th Omnia)/camera (3.2mp) It's windows mobile 6.1 so pretty much the same as the Omnia and if you were to go for a Â£35 contract or above, you'd get the phone for free as well as unlimited internet (No wi-fi though). For an additional charge ( Rumoured Â£50) you can get a voice Satnav function. They're also smaller than the iPhone too and don't look bad at all. The blackberry bold is also coming out on o2 pretty soon too.

Touch diamond isnt all its made out to be. I work for T-Mobile, and we have had countless amounts back due to batteries overheating, and general unstability. It seems a common fault with them

Blackberry bold on the other hand is awesome. Had a play with one the other day and they really are moving the right direction at long last!

Really, when the demo guy came in it seemed to be pretty good, although I don't think the screen size worked very well on a phone like that. There's a new version that's apparently meant to be coming out that has a slide out qwerty keyboard too although no network has signed up to it apparently. I have to agree about the blackberry bold tough, that phone is awesome.

Yeh sorry mate, I got excited about the X1 and didn't really check them out!

Is it likely that the X1 is going to untouchable for the few months? ie. Wayy over priced and crap tarifs?

I really like the look of this phone, but don't really want to have to pay any sort of initial handset charge above Â£100, or sacrifice my already very competitive Â£30 tarif

Ring and say you want to leave. If you're paying about Â£30 p/m then it's very unlikely your provider will want to let you go. Going in-store provides very little leeway (In o2 anyway) so if you kick up a bit of a fuss over the phone they generally end up giving you what you want.

Yeh that's what I plan to do. I was just wondering if it's physically possible for them to give me that much of a deal, if for example the handset came out with an initial handset charge of around Â£180?

As for the slide touch diamond...its called the touch pro. Its rumoured to be the T-Mobile Vario 4 which we are quite anticipating!

o2 are flexible-ish. Depending on what you want tho, T-Mobile is market leading for Â£30

Yeah o2 (As long as it's over the phone) can be really flexible, don't bother going in-store though tbh, we're only told what we can give you through a system which we can't alter at all. If you've been with o2 for quite a while they should be able to offer you a deal. My friend got 1200 minutes, unltd texts a new phone, Â£150 and Â£15 off his line rental (From Â£45 to Â£30) for renewing his contract with them.

I'd like something in the region of Â£30pm with 500 text 500 mins, no heandset charge on the new X1. that realistic another du reckon?

Was that with a top of the range upgrade too?

I've been with O2 a while, can't remember exactly how long though, I'll ahve to check (think I switched contracts a few times with my brother).

Well our set Â£30 p/m tarrif comes with 400 minutes and 500 texts. I think you'd be better off at Â£35 p/m where you get 600 minutes, 500 texts and get to pick a free bolt on e.g. Unlimited weekend/o2 to o2/landline/internet (Especially as that's something you want)/unlimited texts etc.

At the time I'm pretty sure it was a new handset, the w960i or something along those lines. touch screen 8gb memory etc. I wasn't working back then so don't know what kind of range it was in.

I'm 99% sure though that any move onto the iPhone however will mean that it's a "fresh start" with o2 and if you went for the Â£35 p/m contract you'd still have to pay Â£99 - 8gb and Â£159 for the 16gb.
