hi folks, i'm new to the world of polo's and i've bought myself a 1.0l R plate in a bit of a sorry state to rebuild with my son for his 17th birthday.
it sounds like the cam or followers are worn out and it rattles like a good un, is this a common fault? i've priced up new followers but i'm wondering if it would be more cost effective to chuck a second hand lump in,
Any thoughts?
Daddy

By the way, when swapping them, you'll have to take the timing belt of, and the cam out. Why not re-new the timingbelt, camshaft gaskets/seals and waterpump while you're at it

But if you do swap the timingbelt, make sure to swap the waterpump too, only swapping belts has the tendency to wear down the waterpump fast, since when you retension the timingbelt, it's always a bit tenser than before, stressing the pressure on the waterpump, making it wear down much faster then before. Also don't forget to swap tensioners. Swapping that set, and refreshing the oil+oil filter will lengthen the life of that 1.0 lump of your boys car quit some time!
By the way, other "points of interest" on a newly purchasd new Polo engine --> sparkplugleads, the original ones tend to get "dried out", also the gearbox is a weak point of the Polo.
Good luck!
Cheers!
