16V rocker/cam cover

Post by si14 »

Can someone help?
Ive got an oil leak on my'97 16V rocker cover :( . Ive been told there is no gasket on them so it is case of resealing or replacing. Is this true and is the resealing hard to do?
Would be grateful of any asistance.

yes it is true that vw don't do a gasket for it

the gasket on the rocker cover is actually manufactured into each other

vw quote about £130 for a new rocker cover

my girlfriends 16v had the same problem and was told buy vw that they don't do a seperate gasket

the alternative is to take the rokcer cover off and use a paste called ' instant gasket' which ppl use on older cars

this will do the job.

I've got a minor oil leak from my 16v rocker cover too.

I got a minor repair done at the weekend at an independat VW specialist and pointed it out to the mechanic who's a friend of a friend. He indicated that 16v's do tend to leak a little bit in this area and this wasn't too big a problem. He tightened mine up for good measure. Not sure how bad your leak is though.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Also found out that the injection system of a 16v is a full four point electronic injection system rather than a lesser system on the MK2 golf. Apparently its italian and made by the same company that provides injection systems to Ferrari!

Also found out that the 16v gearbox has higher gearing than the ordinary model so should you want to forgo the high rev whine on the motorway in 5th gear you could forgo some lower end acceleration and easily replace it with a normal gearbox. Hmm,.. I'll keep the acceleration thanks, and the engine whine is good!!

cheers guys for your help.
The leak isn't awful. The main thing that bugs me is the oil that leaks sits in the under tray and when you move it decides to spray up over the cat!!! which skinks!!!
I think im gonna opt for the replacement as im thinking of selling the dub. thanks again
