Steering wheel swap.....

Post by paterc »

Hello everyone,
Can anybody tell me which steering wheel (from any model in the VW range) I could use to replace the overlarge standard item on my 1999 T reg 1.4 16v Polo? The size I am looking for is 12 to 13 inches across as opposed to the 14 inches plus thing that's there now. A leather one would be good but it has to have an airbag.
Thanks,
Clive

Hi Clive,

Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is the Mk3.5 Cabby steering wheel. It's the facelifted Mk3 Cabby model. This has the Mk4 Golf - look 3 spoke leather steering wheel, with airbag. It's supposed to bolt straight in your Mk4 Polo. The Lupo/Polo Mk5 and beyond wheels all use different toothing on the hub, so that's out of the question AFAIK.

Main problem; the pricetag on the Cabby item. Expect around 500 notes if bought new.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply to my enquiry. Do you mean £500? Ouch!
Anyway there's always the possibility of getting a wheel from a write-off.
One more thing; how do you know these things.........!?
Thanks,

Clive

It would be ideal if you could find a rear-ended Mk3.5 Cabbie... Rare thing though.

(I spend waaaay too much time online... Sometimes I remember these things :D )

Hi,
thanks for your suggestion. To be honest, I'm not sure whether the VR6 item is smaller. I'll make some enquiries........

For what it's worth, I know other steering wheels fit (hub-wise) but the problem is the airbag. Even if the clip plugs in, you're not garanteed a proper functional airbag unit. Apparently, the resistance differs from airbag to airbag, so the signal sent from a Mk4 sensor unit may be different than an Audi unit, effectively making the airbag unreliable.

All of this is hearsay, and not proven or tested by me in any way.
