Having just had the cylinder head gasket sorted last week (£750) and the eratic idling issue still remains on our 3 year old 2000 1.0 Polo MPi. The garage says that the stepper motor alone is £78o plus fitting. Any ideas where I can get a recondition one?
Major expense from such a little car!!!
Stepper Motor?

you got whipped mate
the only stepper moter that i can think of on a polo engine is the one on the throttle body whgich iirc is sold complete with the throttle body, (this only applies to drive by wire btw ) fyi i looked into another throttle body for mine and decided against it when i found out its over £400!!!!!!!!
have you tried cleaning the throttle body. its a common fault on the polo engines, another thing you might wanna try is giving her a good service with the fuel filter too.
im suffering similar problems but my ecu is adamant that its the first lambda sensor, so far ive changed:
thrust sensor (tells the ecu how much air is going in and its pressure)
lambda sensor #1
green temp sensor
plugs and leads
i keep checking all the wireing to the ecu from the sensor to the ecu so now im checking prices on ecu`s

Thanks chaps. The cost of the cylinder head gasket spiralled from £495. I use this garage because i know they do a real good job and itemise everything, but they are pricey. In the end they worked out more expensive than the VW dealer!
It has had a major service, except fuel filter and leads. Apparently the VW dealer says the filter is on for life? The temp sensor has been changed and the VW dealer says the throttle body is a complete unit around the £700 mark!
I think i'll change the leads and filter before I settle for a replacement stepper motor.
