Can't make the actual engine run any smoother or quiet. All you could do is keep on top of maintenance with regular servicing etc. No other ideas mate.

ah yes, if there are performance mods then obviously reverting to standard would have a major impact on noise and effiency.

Halfords jobs are the worst thing you could do to a car. I temporarily fitted one and ONLY got 165 miles to a full 45L tank  Luckily my K&N arrived and I chucked that piece of tat away!

Put the standard airbox back in (will reduce noise), usual mauntenance of car will keep it smooth, such as regular oil changes.

Maybe service it abit, such as:
New sparks
HT Leads
Dizzy Cap
Carbon Filter
Oil Filter
Oil
Air Filter
etc...

Other good service checks would be to check the exhuast as that might have tiny little rust holes causing extra noise. Also check minor things are tightened well like manifolds (mine where slightly lose when i got the car :s ) Also a carb cleaner would do some good wonders.

Also the standard airbox might be more work than you think, I'm not sure to what extent the previous owner went but theres quite a few items to look out for if you plan on going dealers, best bet is scrappy as there might be alot more missing than just the airbox, such as:

Brackets for engine cover
Engine cover
Hosing for the heating system (for winter)
Metal bracket on manifolds for the hose
The weird heat switch that connects between the hosing
Bolts

If alot is missing you probably might be better off with an induction kit, which most insurances really won't class as a performance mod. Or just get the airbox and link a cold feed to it.
