Longest lasting gearbox?

Post by avfcnutter »

Just wondering the most miles a gearbox has lasted before needing to be fixed?

Thanks

i remember a few years back on here someone managed to make it over 80k on their original box...unsuprisingly soon afterwards it died...judging by how impressed everyone else was at the time i'm guessing not much more has been proven

my gti was on 72k and as far as i was aware it was on its original box..but i wasnt the only owner so who knows

Nope. I don't tend to drive like a maniac (not all the time anyway) but I'm also not concerned about treating the gearbox with any extra special care than I would any other car. I don't limit the amount of revs, I don't think about making gentle starts from a standstill every time and well, I just don't think about it!

What's the worst that can happen? I have a mechanic mate who has offered to strip and rebuild the gearbox if it does go pop at any time.

Fingers crossed, I shall get another six months out of it before thinking about doing anything (i.e. a gearbox oil change). My last gearbox oil change was at about 70k or 72k miles?

I* imagine changing the gearbox oil really prolongs the life of the gearbox, have you had your GTI from new sigti?

Not really. Perhaps by the cleanliness of the box on the exterior

I've had my GTi for five years, the one previous owner had it for the car's first three years and did 51k miles!

Mine is about to hit 51k and seems fine. The slight noises I thought I could must have always been there and nothing to worry about...I usually have my music on anyway
