Engine Numbers

hi guys i have a polo 1.6cl 8v that the engine has bee changed on due to a cracked piston

where on the block is the permanent engine number found???

My son bought a polo with a damaged engine, along with a replacement to put in it. We could not find a number on the replacemet engine, so decided not to use it and sourced another with the correct number. As far as I can find out the engine number only comes on a sticker on the top end of the rocker cover. We have looked all over the blocks but not found anything.
