Cold Start Problems

Post by supermico »

So, here's my first post... unfortunately, it's about a problem... :?

I have to say that I haven't had any major problems so far. However...
I've recently noticed something strange on my 1.4 16v MkV polo: when I try to start it, it turns normally, and then just when it's about to start and I let go of the key - it sounds like it's going to start, but doesn't... Unless I keep turning the key, it turns, then kicks, and turns a bit more and then starts.
Also the temp gauge now moves from 70 to 90 when hot. I wasn't paying much attention before to it, but I think it stayed on 90 all the time?

Now, I've been reading about the temp sensor... could that be the 'symptoms'???

90 is normal idle temperature. It will start at 70 and warm up to 90.

It sounds like you might have a problem with your ignition system, or it could perhaps be the immobiliser at fault. Best thing to do is get it VAG-COM'd by a garage or friend to see if any faults are flagged up

Sorry, my bad... I mean the water temp now when it's already on 90 drops down to 70 sometimes while i'm driving and then climbs back to 90. I think that before it stayed on 90 all the time when it warmed up.

or could it be just winter and below zero temperatures??

oh, and another thing I forgot to mention. I only have problems starting the car in the morning, when I first start it. After a few minutes, when it warms up, it starts at the first attempt.

that sounds like a temp sender for sure. Not an expensive fix either

Here's a guide:

Ok, changed the temp sensor today. I have to wait till tomorrow morning though for the engine to cool down and see if it starts ok.
As far as the temp gauge goes, it still drops to 70 when driving. At idle it is on 90 all the time. I sthis normal?
