HELP.....more 97 AER problems!!

Post by poloowner »

I recently posted about some mayo lookin gunk in the air filter and subsequently in the oil cap.....i got a mate to change the had gasket and changed the cam belt whilst he was at it....he put it all back together and the car was still lacking in power. He suggested it may be that the oil breathe box/cannister was blocked and it wasnt letting the engine breathe properly so he took this off completely and it was chocka with gunk...he has cleaned this out and i am waiting on a phone call any minute to see if that was the problem....what i wanted to know is are there any common problems with this blocking and obviously it has become blocked at some point and just built up over time....does any one know the cause of this blockage...such as not changing the oil often enough....
Thanks alot for your time and any advice would be greatly appreciated

The water oil mixture of gunk is extremely high in the mk4's for some reason even without a broken head gasket. My 1.0 suffered from it alot regardless of what was done, but the bigger engines seem not to be as bad as the 1.0.

It is common for the gunk to block up the vacuum hose, some parts of the TB and the breather. Which is why I disconnected the breather from the airbox and gave it its own filter to gunk up. You could try getting a breather tank and filter as well.

Also he breather if it is blocked it can cause the gaskets to break due to the high pressure build up in the engine, we once blocked the breather by accident and oil was seeping out of every hole it could find, even the dipstick due to the high pressure build up within the engine.

Only advice given is to get a canister with a filter for the breather, let it gunk that up and nothing else. Also an "engine flush/oil change" would be advised, but this would not clean the breather pipe out. as your changing and flushing the oil in the engine and not in the breather, what I did was got some engine flush put it in a compressor and sprayed it down the breather to force the gunk out as best I could. Either that or disconnect the breather and you should be able to house the gunk out using hot water.

Hope this helps.

Turns out the cat had disintergrated and it was blocking the flow of exhaust gases, every now and again it would free up but now i have de catted it for the moment and its running better thatn ever before..
